The “Science, Religion, and the Big Bang” video provides some thoughtful definitions of the concepts surrounding the theory of the universe’s origins and growth. It claims that the Big Bang should be referred to as “the everywhere stretch,” and the singularity of the universe is really an “I don’t know.” The video also mentions a Catholic priest and scientist named George Lemaitre in order to introduce the seemingly contrasting positions of religion and science.
The video helped me understand the science behind the Big Bang. It is actually not an explosion but more of an expansion of space in all directions. Most interesting was the relationship of religion to science. People always seem to pit religion against science, as if the two cannot agree or compliment one another. For example, the video ends by mentioning that Lemaitre may need to reconsider the Bible’s phrase “In the beginning.” However, I think the video supports a compliment between religion, at least the Christian Bible, and reasonable science. If the singularity equals an unknown and the Big Bang actually refers to the expansion of already existing universe, rather than the explosion of everything out of nothing, then cannot God creating the world and science explaining it cohere? I am no expert in physics and do not know a lot about the Christian Bible. But based on this video, it seems that the two do not need to disagree. Is culture just pitting these two against each other, because it has for so long? Or does it simply want a fight and no harmony? I would like to hear from a reasonable and intelligent Christian and a reasonable and intelligent scientist in order to discover the truth.
