Although many leaders believe that team building exercises are a necessary way to get their group to perform effectively and efficiently, many of them choose to forgo team building techniques. The companies who choose to not use team building activities usually do so because they either lack staff members who are well trained in these techniques, do not understand the importance of this method, or they are skeptical as to whether these methods actually work or not. In my experience, group leaders generally choose to forgo team building exercises because they are unsure as to whether these techniques will work or not; if time is put aside for team building that is ultimately ineffective, then time, money, and resources are wasted. For example, while I was a student living in undergraduate housing, my resident assistant was required to host team building exercises. Despite this requirement, he didn’t expect us to attend because he personally thought it was a waste of time. While I agree with his thoughts in this situation, I feel that team building exercises are useful in the business arena.
Action learning develops and improves teams in an organization by taking advantage of the belief that the most effective learning occurs when people learn things from real life situations. This allows employees to take what they learn and apply it to more closely related instances. The technique itself “combines training with developing innovative solutions to existing organizational problems”. I once worked in a convenience store, and the staff used this technique to train me. Instead of familiarizing me with operating the cash register in a fake situation, I was put directly on the register and required to interact with customers while a supervisor guided me and provided comments about what I was doing right and wrong. In addition, I was required to solve my own problems; my supervisor would only step in and help when I seemed stuck. This way, I was able to apply what I learned during my training to my daily job responsibilities, and I was prepared for a multitude of situations that occurred after the initial training.
