E-commerce refers to a business model in which the buying and selling of goods and services is conducted through the internet. It is inclusive of online advertising, electronic transfer of funds after which delivery of the said goods and services is done either via courier of a delivery person. E-commerce is a trend that emerged around 1995 with the coming up of the World Wide Web which offered a platform for a lot of technological innovations. (Becker, 2008)
Initially, the main aspect of e-commerce was advertisement and sale of goods and services on websites with Amazon and eBay being the most notable entities of that time. Currently, most businesses conduct all their transactions on the internet, with or without websites. Presently, there has been tremendous growth in e-commerce with the advent of more online platforms to market and advertise. The emergence of social media, electronic and money transfer, online shops complete with mobile applications has revolutionized the field of e-commerce. All this is due to the technological advancement in the information and technology field and more so with effective software and applications to be utilized.

With continuous advancement of the internet, businesses are likely to shift most operations to be online to keep up with changes in the market. More advertising and marketing campaigns will be pushed on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. With all these, society may shift from the traditional set up of visiting the malls for shopping and adopt e-commerce as it is seen to make our lives easier by allowing us to shop online, pay and wait for our deliveries. Increased dependence on the internet for business will result in a significant shift socially for entrepreneurs and investors as well.

The bible supports the idea of advancement and growth of businesses that are open to changes in the environment they operate in. This is as stated in the book of Ecclesiastes 9:11 which states that: “The race is not for the hasty or the fight for the strong, nor does food come to the intelligent or wealth to the bright or favor to the educated, but time and chance happen to them all.” This is to mean that utilizing online platforms for e-commerce is an opportunity open to all and will benefit those who utilize it in the right way. In an era where we want to make our lives easier, e-commerce is the way to go.
