Leadership & Youth Radicalism

344 words | 2 page(s)

Myatt notes that the fundamental problem facing world leaders today is the misunderstanding of the elements of good leadership. Today’s global leaders not only place positional and philosophical arguments above forward progress, but they also consider it more important to be right than to be vulnerable and receptive to new ideas and thoughts (Myatt). In addition, global leaders have been unable to appreciate the need to be empathetic and compassionate instead of being egoistic, and they have placed more value on rhetoric instead of performance (Myatt). The global leaders’ misunderstanding of the elements of good leadership has made people accept bad leadership and undermined their incentive to agitate for change. To address the challenges of global leadership, it is necessary for people to understand their role in creating these challenges, but this is a challenge as well because the people’s understanding of such challenges depends on the leaders’ willingness to empower the people to do so. The leaders have benefitted from these challenges, and this makes it unlikely for them to be motivated to empower their people to address these challenges.

Njoku (6) suggests that the combination of three ideologies has created a youth culture that promises to change the world. These ideologies are postmodernist thinking, opulence and consumerist greed, and unsustainable resource utilization, and they have encouraged the youth to embrace the revolutionary and radical culture that seems best suited to dismantle the state systems that have caused economic deterioration and aggravated the prevalence of global poverty. The emerging youth culture increases the likelihood that the world is evolving into a larger welfare state, the ideal socialism, or the breakdown of social order that will give way to anarchism and a lawless society (Njoku 11). The grim prospects of the future make it essential for world leaders to change tact and align their leadership styles with the emerging realities.
