Teachers’ Payment

1195 words | 4 page(s)

Teachers are critical members of the society. This is because they are in charge of all educational systems. To enhance proper development through structuring of the educational systems, teachers play a big role in ensuring all students perform their educational responsibilities. In promoting the noble duties and obligations, teachers make several sacrifices in their social and cultural lives to ensure that there is academic excellence. Different educational administrators have adopted various ways in which they appreciate the efforts and sacrifices made by teachers in accordance to student performance. Performance pay is believed to be one the ways to motivate teachers to teach well (Hayden, 2011, p.144). To uphold high educational standards and embrace fairness, one can find two reasons for teachers to be paid according to their students’ academic performance in order to improve teaching quality.

One reason that teachers should be paid according to their students’ academic performance is to improve teaching. In almost every professional career, people are compensated for their efforts and time. Some of these payments vary depending on the difficulties and professional logistics that are related to the career. The education of children is a very noble activity and needs to be regarded with all the dignity it deserves. To acquire the right education, there are various things that the teachers are demanded to do. Some of these things include preparation of the materials, organization of the learning environment and structuring lessons so as to ensure that the children acquire the right education. Compensation of the teachers according to student performance is very crucial towards the attainment of these goals. Performance of teachers is directly proportional to the level of motivation. High performance is very essential to the life of a child. The teachers that achieve excellence need more motivation so that the others can also be forced to put more effort. This is because this is a very important aspect in determining the future life. If a child is subjected to very high educational standards, the child is likely to have good opportunities regarding to careers. The standard of education also determines the social class in which an individual belongs. To ensure that a child acquires the best education, a teacher plays a very important role. In order to have the highest standards of education, the morale of teachers should be enhanced. In promoting the level of psychological comfort, a teacher should be supported mentally by enhancing physical comfort from the money that should be paid to his services. In this regard, one of the best ways to improve teaching is to make it more cooperative, so that the teacher and the students work as one team. The positive associations between teamwork and performance-related pay were found by Belfield & Heywood (2008).

The field of education is very dynamic. This is because there are very many advancements that are experienced in the field. Teachers need to update their education in order to deliver the most relevant education to the children. Globalization is a very important aspect of the world today. In order to be conversant with various endeavors related to globalization, teachers need to acquire more education constantly. To make sure that children acquire the most meaningful education, it is important that they get the highest quality education. Teachers cannot deliver high quality education that is up to date if they do not receive compensation. This is because, through compensation, they get the funds which they can use to advance their education. Some people would argue that it is impossible to measure students’ performance from year to year and that merit-based pay will be awarded unfairly to teachers. However, these days “states and districts are rapidly developing massive longitudinal student-level databases that permit more precise estimation of value added contributions (…)” (Podgursky & Springer, 2007).

Another reason that teachers should be paid according to their students’ academic performance is that it is more fair .Giving high performers and low performers the same recognition is unfair. To get the right educational qualifications to enhance high performance, teachers have committed a lot of resources towards their education. This is through the fees that they pay to go through the educational system. Teachers also commit a lot of time towards their duty. This includes the time that is spent preparing for the lessons and the time that is spent in delivering the relevant materials. Besides teaching, teachers are given the responsibility of taking care of the children. This includes all activities that assist in acquiring the right ethical and moral standards. This is because, the teachers spend more time with these children than their parents. The fairness of the performance-related pay is based on the fact that teachers will receive the reward for their efforts not for their degrees and their years of service (Genscheimer, 2009). This can serve a good incentive to younger teachers. Therefore, compensation according to performance is justified for these teachers.

Just like any human being, teachers have their social lives. This includes living a family life. Most of these teachers have normal family obligations to take care of just like other people. These obligations include providing the basic needs in a family, and paying out bills. To ensure that the teacher provides the required services, mental comfort is very important. To enhance this moral support and comfort, a teacher must be in a stable financial and social position. As a respected member of the family and society, a teacher has a moral obligation of being neat. This is also a very critical part of the ethics and morals that govern the teaching profession. All these responsibilities and obligations for a teacher need a lot of financial resource to accomplish. Therefore, good performers need to be given more payment so as to promote their social life for the others to see and work harder. This is confirmed by Ludger Woessmann’s study “Cross-country evidence on teacher performance pay” (2011), where it was found that in all countries that adopted the performance based pay scheme, teaching quality increased and students’ performance increased, too.

Finally, just like any other career, performing teachers spend a lot of energy and time in their work. If these teachers were not in class teaching, they could have been engaged in other economic activities in other places. The main aim of these economic activities is to generate income. The teachers opt to perform their duty of preparing future professionals of all dimensions. If teachers are not paid, they may easily abandon their duties so as to be involved in other economic activities that can promote their survival. This may be very dangerous for children and their parents. Therefore, payment to teachers is one of the aspects that promote fairness in the society. In conclusion, teachers form an integral part of the society. Their duties and obligations play a big role in preparing people to take various positions in the society in the future. Motivation is very essential to their duties. This can assist in attracting more competent people into the profession and thus improve the standards of education. Proportional compensation according to performance is very crucial. This is to compensate the sacrifices and the resources that the teachers use to advance their career.
