The distinction between theory and practice is one of the most fundamental conceptual differences in the history of Western European thought: on the one hand, theory generally refers to more abstract forms of knowledge, located in our mind and how we think about things, whereas practice, is actually performing tasks. The reason why theory and practice are interrelated is that practice requires some type of understanding on the mental level of what is being done to be successfully performed, whereas theory divorced from practice means that abstract ideas about reality without knowing how to make these ideas reality means they are separated from being made real.
This basic distinction helps us compare the study of architecture in a university and college setting and working for an architectural firm on the practical level of the internship. What emerges from this comparison is that although these are two distinct areas, one without the other cannot be successfully performed. For example, the study of architecture on a theoretical level gives the individual key concepts with which to think architecture, from some of the basics of architectural designs to how historical figures themselves approached and revolutionized standard architectural concepts. In other words, it is impossible to be successful in the praxis of internship without such a conceptual and theoretical understanding so as to orient oneself in this practice.

From the other hand, the practical aspect proves why theory is important: if some architectural concepts do not have a home in practice, one has to question their value to reality and everyday life. Architects are making in a sense “living” structures, and without a practical element this is impossible: practice makes the relationships that make up architecture — from the basic concepts to the relationship in the architectural business that become apparent in the setting of praxis – clear to the student. Accordingly, both theory and practice, while offering different perspectives on architecture, contribute to the essence of architecture as a whole: one without the other is simply not architecture.
