Inequality is of specific concern within the business context, because it infers that not all parties are being treated the same. A prime example of inequality is providing differential wages or contracts on an arbitrary basis, such as race or gender. There may be unequal wages on the basis of skill. However, it is clear that in the letter case that there is a justified reason for the inequality. This means it is not always the case that inequality will be a negative factor within the business context, however, it is necessary that reasonable business judgment is used to justify any differential treatment.

Poverty is inextricably linked with the concept of inequality. Poverty generally means that the individual does not have access to the same opportunities as more affluent individuals. Consequently, it is necessary to ensure businesses that set up within impoverished areas are conscious of their actions, in order to prevent abuse of position. This abuse of position can give rise to exploitation, which is fundamentally improper. Rather, the inference is that there should be transparent and recordable actions when businesses work in and employ persons within depraved areas, especially in developing countries where the same employment protections as the developed world are not present.

Discrimination is another factor that is inextricably linked to inequality. Discrimination refers to an action where there is improper and/or unequal treatment due to a specific factor of the individual’s social group. This means that the unequal actions are negative and are based on characteristics, such as race, gender, disability or sexual preference.
