If I am given a choice as a professor to teach a course of my choice, I will choose psychology. We live in a world where we constantly interact with people with a diverse range of personalities, backgrounds, life experiences, lifestyles, and tastes and it is true in almost every profession and in every industry. Technical skills are important but one cannot overstate the importance of soft skills such as social and communication skills. This is why psychology is so important in both personal and professional aspects of our lives because it helps us understand how people think and why they think the way they think. Psychology may seem quite an unlikely course for business majors but this could not have been farther from the truth. Knowledge of human psychology may be one of the most important skills a business professional may need.
In business, truth is not what is fact but what customers think is fact. In other words, consumers’ opinions and perceptions are what matter most. Similarly, businesses do not sell products and services but instead meet certain needs and desires. Thus, it is important for businesses to understand their consumers and knowledge of human psychology helps them understand their consumers. Similarly, knowledge of human psychology also helps people develop successful relationships with other stakeholders such as business partners, communities, and investors etc. We cannot build successful relationships unless we can put ourselves in others’ shoes and knowledge of human psychology allows us to view things from others’ perspectives. The better we understand others, the greater is the probability of us building successful relationships with a variety of business stakeholders including customers. I believe it is one of the most important skills to be able to put one self in others’ shoes that is why I will choose to teach psychology. In addition to understand how others think and why they think the way they think, students may need to do research on their subjects to gather as much knowledge as possible. Similarly, students could also critically analyze their experiences interacting with different groups of people to improve their social skills.

This skill of being able to view things from others’ perspectives will help students assume leadership roles in their professional lives because a leader is one who is effective at motivating and inspiring others. It will also help them in personal relationships because the key to successful communication is to understand what the other person intends to say.
