The process of communication is the method by which individuals are able to convey information from one party to another. Communication may occur in either verbal or non-verbal forms. Verbal communication occurs when individuals convey information and ideas through the use of speech. Non-verbal communication, on the other hand, is the information that is conveyed without the use of words. A shrug as a response to a question, the nodding of one’s head in the affirmative or negative, or even gestures and facial tics and expressions are just some of the different forms of non-verbal communication that may be used.
Knowledge of non-verbal communication tactics offers the ability to communicate more easily with others. If two people do not speak the same language, they are still able to get certain points across by means of gestures, signs, and body language. Knowledge of non-verbal communication strategies can also make a person better at communicating in their own language; if a person mirrors the body language and gestures of another, the other person is more likely to be open to what the first person is saying, for example.
