Determining Operating Systems and Software Applications
There are many different types of computer software and hardware that are used by various organizations and corporations in order to not only work to keep their operations running, but allow for additional operations to be completed. Center Point Energy is one such corporation that utilizes both computer software and hardware in order to be able to function and provide increased services to its customers.

As a result of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Investment Grant under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, Center Point Energy has been able to implement new software and hardware in order to provide better service to its customers, work to create jobs, and provide sustained positions to employees (Center Point, 2013). In addition to the implementation of the smart meter, a piece of computer hardware, and the software necessary for it to run and interface with the data centers that it connects to, a communications infrastructure needed to be created, and additional back office computer systems needed to be installed in order to manage increased usage of electric data (Center Point, 2011). These smart meters measure usage over 15 minute intervals, providing that information in real time to consumers as well as transmitting the data to Center Point directly (Center Point, 2011).

The information is transmitted to call relays, wireless devices that are installed on the electric distribution poles within the area (Center Point, 2011). This data is then collected by radio towers and delivered either by microwave or via fiber optic cables to the Center Point data center for processing (Center Point, 2011).

Through the use of wireless devices, smart meters, data centers, servers, and computers, and through the use of the software necessary to run not only the smart meters, but the servers and computers, Center Point is able to work to functionally distribute electricity throughout their service area.
