Nursing Informatics Pioneers

899 words | 3 page(s)

Nursing informatics is a unique area of study that addresses the significance of expanding the scope of nursing practice in order to accomplish key objectives in research and quality of patient care. Many pioneers have created opportunities for nurses in order to improve patient outcomes and practice settings using tools and techniques that are instrumental in supporting the growth and expansion of nursing practice. Two nursing informatics pioneers that are worthy of discussion include Dr. Virginia Saba, the initiator of the nursing informatics movement (AMIA, 2014), and Dr. Susan K. Newbold, who developed a nursing informatics course for experienced nurses and nursing students (AMIA, 2014). Both nurse pioneers represent many opportunities for growth in nursing practice and continue to support the field in their activities to enable nurses to use technology and information to the best of their ability through education and within the practice setting. These pioneers also demonstrate that nursing is not merely direct patient care, as it is a complex field with many facets, including continuing education and research, both of which support the growth and development of new perspectives to facilitate favorable outcomes for many different nursing environments.

Analysis
Nursing informatics is a science in and of itself that enables nurses to utilize technology in the form of computers, databases, and scientific principles in order to advance nursing practice in many areas (HIMSS, 2014). This field represents the most advanced technological frameworks for nurses to use in their practice settings that support the growth of practice objectives and the challenges that nurses face as they identify and incorporate data into their daily practice routines (HIMSS, 2014). This process is instrumental in the growth and development of new strategies that enable nurses to effectively use data and support the delivery of high quality care and treatment to patients, using the most updated tools and technologies to enhance this delivery and the opportunities that are available to nurses to expand their own knowledge of informatics and its role in nursing practice (HIMSS, 2014). Many nurse experts have taken this field in new and interesting directions and have established a higher tone for nursing practice as it stands in the 21st Century.

Dr. Virginia K. Saba has been an innovator in nursing technology-based solutions for over four decades and is considered to be one of the key founders of the movement and its focus on healthcare delivery through technological means (AMIA, 2014). Dr. Saba has demonstrated her ability to be an effective communicator and to challenge the status quo by incorporating technology into the nursing work environment to improve practice settings over time (AMIA, 2014). Some of her primary accomplishments include the Clinical Care Classification (CCC) System and the Graduate Nursing Distance Learning Project in conjunction with the Veterans Administration (AMIA, 2014). Dr. Saba also represents an opportunity for nurses to be successful communicators through their practice objectives and to recognize the importance of nursing practice as a means of advancing care and treatment alternatives for patients (AMIA, 2014). Dr. Saba is currently the President and CEO of a company known as Sabacare Inc. & CCC System, which is responsible for the integration of terminology for nurses into electronic documentation solutions that nurses use in their daily activities (AMIA, 2014).

Dr. Susan K. Newbold, an expert nurse consultant, has been a force in the field of nursing informatics since 1982, when she established CARING, a nursing informatics group (AMIA, 2014). Dr. Newbold is also known for the development of a nursing informatics course that has been largely successful, earning awards for its innovative stance and approach to this field of study (AMIA, 2014). She is also an internationally known speaker and continues to be an effective communicator regarding nursing informatics throughout the world, including such areas as Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore (AMIA, 2014). Dr. Newbold is also the recipient of the Outstanding Nurse Educator of the Year as provided by the Maryland Nurses Association (AMIA, 2014). Dr. Newbold continues to be a driving force in the field of nursing informatics and is highly instrumental in shaping this field and the ability of nurses to be effective communicators in the area of informatics to promote greater efficiency and easier access to information to enhance practice objectives.

Conclusion
Dr. Virginia Saba and Dr. Susan Newbold represent the best of the best in nursing informatics and are pioneers of this unique field. They have established a precedent for nursing practice that continues to expand and grow in the context of advanced technological capabilities that are integrated into modern practice settings. Both nurse pioneers have been lauded for their contributions to nursing informatics because they support the continued growth and development of practice settings in order to achieve positive outcomes in the delivery of patient care. Furthermore, their contributions play an important role in shaping research-based objectives and outcomes for nurses seeking to solve problems that nurses often experience on the job. It is important to consider the contributions of both nurse pioneers, as they and others in the field have established a positive tone for expanding the growth and success of nursing informatics and its growth in the nursing field. With the continued expansion of technology-based solutions, nurses will be required to be effective communicators in their efforts to support and sustain high quality care and treatment on a continuous basis. Nursing informatics is an important component of this practice and supports high quality delivery of care and treatment to patients across a variety of practice areas.
