In terms of nursing, cultural diversity entails two different aspects: race and age. In the United States, people are living much longer on average compared to previous decades. Not only has the population expanded, but also people are living longer, which places a much greater burden on the health care system. Aside from the changing age demographics, the United States has also become more diverse racially within the past few decades. Specifically, there are more people now from other countries, particularly South America and Asia, living and working in the United States, and this change presents new challenges to the field of nursing.
Cultural diversity will influence and impact my nursing career. First, awareness of the changing age demographics will help focus my attention on areas of nursing that may not have been emphasized as frequently before, such as geriatric studies. There will probably be more demand for these types of nurses in the future. Second, awareness of the changing racial demographics will help focus my attention on areas of nursing that are specialized to certain diseases, as different people may be more or less likely to contract certain illnesses.
