Ever since the United States of America has gained its independence from Great Britain, the two nations have drifted apart in several noteworthy ways. The U.S. has developed its own distinctive culture, largely based upon values enshrined via the Constitution. It has also developed its own political processes largely based upon those inherited from Great Britain, although modified in numerous ways to fall in line with the tenets of this Constitution and American values.
The establishment of Congress is perhaps the most obvious example, as it greatly resembles the British Parliamentary system with the adoption of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Both of these Houses of Congress adhere to much of the same purposes and objectives as Great Britain’s Houses of Parliament (Syam). It is therefore apparent that the United States has already learned a great deal from the political processes established in Great Britain.

The nature of our own modifications to these processes and characteristics is wherein lies that which Great Britain can come to learn from the United States. The Parliamentary system of government found in Great Britain is certainly what the U.S. Presidential system is based upon, although the U.S. system has done quite a bit to establish itself as unique. For instance, whereas the U.S. system allows for the election of a President to serve as the head of state, the Prime Minister of the U.K. is not afforded such a responsibility (The Irish News). Furthermore, while the U.S. President is limited to serving only two terms (8 years) in office, Great Britain’s Prime Minister is not subject to such a limitation (The Irish News).
The American justification for these term limits is to prevent the onset of authoritarian rule, and is certainly an effective measure of doing so, especially considering an acting President’s inability to override this limitation. Great Britain would be well served to examine aspects of our political system such as these in order to improve their own, just as we have done with theirs in the past.
