Religious freedom in the United States was the outcome of the efforts of the liberators who focused on the freedom of religion captured in the First Amendment. The First Amendment is one of the documents that talk about the protection of religious rights in the US. It proscribes the Federal Government from making a law against the establishment of a religion and restricting the free exercise of the same religion. The freedom of faith was established for the first time in the establishing of the territory “of Maryland by the Catholic Lord Baltimore, in 1634.” In 1649, fifteen years later, there was the enactment of religious liberty, and was referred to as, The Maryland Toleration Act (Sullivan, 2008).
This Act addressed the issues of molesting or denying others from exercising religious practices within the land. This Act was repealed with the help of the Protestant Assemblymen and the new law barred the Catholics from practicing their religion. In 1657, Lord Baltimore recuperated control over the Act and made a deal with the Colony’s Protestant. In the following year, the Act was again passed by the colonial assembly. Over thirty years later, 1692, the freedom of religion was quashed due to the Protestant Revolution in 1689. In 1704, an Act was enacted to restrict the growth of Popery in the region. This prevented Catholics from holding political offices (Corrigan &Neal, 2010).

Full liberation of religious freedoms in the United States took place after the American Revolution. In different regions within the States and at different times were introduced to combined religious freedoms with political parties (Clark, 2004). This was from 1636 to 1682. The colonies in the United States were viewed as safe havens for prosecuted religious minorities in the US. Through the aid of democratic leaders; Williams, Hooker, Penn among other friends of their, made to understand that freedom of conscience and democracy were the will of God.
