Cell Phones Should Be Banned in Schools

305 words | 2 page(s)

When the bell rings for school, the cell phone should not be allowed to ring. There should not be cell phones allowed on school properties because cell phones are a distraction to the student, and to other students. Moreover, cell phones are distracting outside of class because it keeps students from socializing with each other. There are many reasons that cell phones should not be allowed at school, but the two main reasons include that they completely distract the student from the purposes of learning, and they also prevent the student from genuinely engaging socially with their peers.

Imagine that a teacher is giving a lecture and the student feels compelled to pay attention to the lecture; perhaps, it is interesting. However, a little silent buzz goes off, and the student’s mind is immediately pulled away from the lecture, and his mind pays attention to the phone. The student may, or may not, recapture his interest in the lecture.

When that same student gets out of class, another student approaches him to ask about whether he understood the lecture, and to joke about the teacher. However, he does not have time for classmate interaction, because he is involved with the phone and walks off.

Because students must be completely “in the moment” when being at school, it makes sense that we should eliminate the biggest distraction from the student’s environment: the cell phone. Texting and social media should not be a priority while learning.

Students will be better served if we disallow cell phones in school. Class lectures will not e interrupted, and the time spent with peers has the opportunity, without the distraction of cell phones, to be genuine. For these reasons, this essay argues that cell phones do not belong in schools, and all schools should adopt a “no cellphone” policy.
