Global warming is arguably the most important issue of public interest that has been receiving worldwide attention and deservedly so. Even though the scientific community is almost united on the claim that global warming is real and is being caused by human activity, there is no shortage of skeptics who go as far as to claim it a hoax. It is not usual for skeptics of global warming in the media to mask their opinions as facts. But the evidence clearly refutes many of the claims made by the global warming skeptics.
One of the myths often circulated in the media is that sea levels are static or lowering which could not have been farther from the truth. British Antarctic Survey found that ice discharge rate by the Antarctic glaciers had increased by nearly 300 percent in about a decade. Similarly, American researchers discovered that ice depth in Arctic Ocean has declined by about two-fifth over the last four decades . When ice melts, it turns into water and it is difficult to see how skeptics have arrived at the conclusion that sea levels are static or even lowering.

The skeptics of global warming even claim global warming has ceased since 1998 but data proves otherwise. Not only average temperatures have risen by approximately 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880 but most of the rise has been during the recent decade . In fact, global warming crisis has only been getting worse over time and it is no surprise that seven of the ten deadliest natural disasters during the period 1987-2007 occurred between 2000 and 2006 only .
It is clear that global warming is real and the data in support of global warming is so overwhelming that the majority of the scientific community is united on the issue. One cannot ignore the influence of media on the masses and it is time media realize its responsibilities in educating the public, especially the skeptics.
