Many employers today, especially those running small businesses, may want to encourage their employees to display some entrepreneurial behavior. This type of behavior can lead to innovation and be prosperous for the business. Additionally, it can encourage the employee to take more interest in his or her job as he or she may feel this his or her ideas are being listened to, taken seriously, and even implemented. Furthermore, employees who display entrepreneurial behavior may be more appropriate for management and higher level positions within the company.

To understand why employers want encourage entrepreneurial behavior in their employees, it is first necessary to understand what falls into the category of entrepreneurial behavior. According to an article entitled “The Behavioral Traits of A Successful Entrepreneur” appearing on the Forbes.com website, some things that fall into the category of entrepreneurial behavior include: 1) taking on challenges, 2) promoting the business, 3) being a perpetual learner of the business, 4) multiplying yourself through delegation, 5) being a self-starter, and 6) building relationships. When looking over the aforementioned list, it is easy to understand why employers want employees to display entrepreneurial behavior. An employee who is willing to take on challenges that arise within the business may have great problem solving ability and lessens the workload for their superiors. Encouraging employees to display behaviors that promote the business benefits the business as a whole in addition to encouraging the employee to take pride in the business in which he or she is in. Being a perpetual learner would make an employee more efficient and effective at his or her job. Employees who can take on the role of delegation also help to lessen the workload for superiors; additionally, so does being a self-starter. Lastly, employees who build relationships are more likely to enjoy their jobs, work harder, and there is less turnover.

It is easy to understand why an employers would want to encourage entrepreneurial behavior in their employees. One way that employees can encourage this type of behavior is to put employees in charge of certain projects on which the employee must take the lead role. Another way to encourage entrepreneurial behavior among employees is to have contests in which the employees can participate for which employees need to demonstrate the aforementioned behaviors. Finally, to encourage employees to display entrepreneurial behavior, it is important to make sure the work environment is comfortable and enjoyable to the employees, and that they feel their ideas will be listened to.
