Part One. Phonemes and the International Phonetic Alphabet
In this part of the writing task, I will translate the first twenty words of the text above into the International Phonetic Alphabet symbols. This will require the use of the resource http://ipa.typeit.org/full/. Before writing a phonetic transcription, I would like to note that phonetics is defined as the “systematic identification and description of distinctive speech sounds in a language” (Havilland, Prins, Walrath, & McBrid 179). Since the transcription will be made of phonemes, it is necessary to define a phoneme. According to Havilland et al, a phoneme should be seen as “the smallest unit of sound that makes a difference in meaning” between the words (Havilland et al 179).

Part Two: Morphemes, Bound & Free
In order to identofy morphemes and classify them as B (bound) or F (free), I will write a definition of the morpheme. Peterson defines a morpheme as “a piece of phonological information that has a conventionalized meaning arbirraily associated with it.” (Peterson)
There are free and bound morphemes. Free morphemes are independent and are used alone, and bound morphemes are dependent and they are not used alone. They are also known as affixes.
