The way you live is totally up to you. Simply make sure that your present lifestyle is not really hazardous to your health. Everybody will agree that it’s smart to be fully aware of what you actually do. It’s smart to be aware of how what you do affects the quality of your life. Drinking and the use of drugs are those things which can cause serious problems to us. Well, all of us want to enjoy life, yet all of us should definitely learn to abstain from habits and practices that can be harmful.
Let us take drinking. Many lives today are being affected by alcohol. There are ten million of alcoholics in our country today. Americans are known to spend as much as $110 million on liquor a day. There is 1 in 5 chance your family are experiencing problems because of alcohol abuse. These problems are diverse and grave. As liquor invades each cell in in our bodies, it brings adverse effects on health. In pregnant women, liquor can have a bad effect on the size and development of unborn children. Alcoholism is also linked to with a few types of cancer, in particular those that are found in liver, head, and neck regions. It is also one of the key causes of all fatalities and major injuries of American drivers. 33 per cent of fatalities among American drivers aged 16-20 were caused by alcohol consumption in 2008 (Peck, Gebers, Voas, & Romano 311). Not all people become alcoholics, but those who do encounter serious life problems (for example, they may lose jobs, lose families, and lose their material well-being). Another high-risk area is drug abuse. Drug abuse has major adverse effects on people’s lifestyle, which exceed even those that alcohol brings. To specify, drugs lead to major changes in those brain areas, which are responsible for emotions and for memory. This brings bad effects on people’s psychological and physical health. For example, lengthy abusers of the drug methamphetamine experience rapid heart rate, extreme weight loss, mood disturbances, violent conduct, anxiety, increased blood pressure, and insomnia (Castro 390). Drug abusers suffer from loss of their social standings and problems in their families. To make matters worse, this habit may even lead to suicide.
It is true that we sometimes feel that we do not achieve balance in our lives. We sometimes can’t find fulfillment at home, in the workplace, or with other people, so we may want to turn to alcohol or drugs. But we must always remember that alcohol and drug use may forever change our lifestyle, undermine our well-being, as well as subtract many years from our lives. So we should definitely avoid them!
