Globalization was meant to unite countries through free flow of ideas and open communication yet we are not any closer to making this world a peaceful place for everyone to live. I first understood we live in one of the most challenging times after the tragedy of 9/11. Over the years, I have come to realize that the enemies of peace are not only sovereign nations like North Korea but also independent organizations like Al-Qaeda. In other words, the war of ideologies has only spread and the key to peace is not use-of-force but winning people’s hearts. This is why I have decided to pursue my studies in International Relations and Affairs so that I can help bridge the gap between the East and the West through better understanding and respect for each other.
Language is one of the most important means of cultural exchange which is why I spent one year learning French after high school. I plan to learn more languages in the future because language is a window into the soul of a particular culture. When we speak others’ languages, we probably give them the highest form of respect and in a world being shaped by globalization, the importance of languages other than English will continue to rise.

I have always been a great student as evident by my impressive GPA and have done particularly well in Law and Political Science courses. I consider critical thinking as one of my primary personality traits. This is why I enjoy subjects like Law and Political Science because they are a combination of Science and Art, just like the world we live in which is mostly grey rather than being black and white.
I strive for excellence not only in academics but in co-curricular activities as well. Education doesn’t only take place inside classrooms but everywhere if we pay attention. In addition, I try to push myself to understand my limits through diverse activities including riding horses, ballet dance, soccer, and playing piano. All of these activities have taught me something about myself and have also helped me appreciate arts and culture. I have no doubt this appreciation of culture and arts will be quite a valuable trait during career as a diplomat because when someone truly appreciates a culture, it shows in his/her actions.
In addition, I also read both local and international news to gain multiple perspectives because you cannot understand others properly unless you understand their biases and point-of-views. A mirror has always two sides and most people often look at only one side of the mirror to form their opinions and worldviews. Not only an ordinary person makes this mistake but even veteran politicians and leaders are rarely aware of their biases and stereotypes which prevent them from having an objective understanding of world events. I hope to use the insights I have gained from diverse range of experiences to help shape more objective and pragmatic U.S. foreign policy.
I am particularly interested in the program because it will introduce me to new ideas and concepts and will also enable me to interact with talented individuals from different ethnic, cultural, and professional backgrounds. I have no doubt I will be an effective ambassador of the university in the real world and will play an important role in bringing people and cultures closer.
