The Issue of Absences

320 words | 2 page(s)

School attendance policies are designed to ensure that students are able to obtain all of the information that they will need in order to be able to advance to the next grade. The idea behind them is that if a student misses too many days, they have thereby missed too much of the information covered in class, information they will need in order to advance in their school career, and as such must be held back, or sent to summer school in order to recoup the information lost as a result of lost time. These policies have to do with both the amount of days missed overall, and the amount of time missed as a result of cutting one specific class.

I believe that while there is merit to the concept, that a set amount of time has been provided in order to make sure that the students are able to retain the information that they need, and if they do not receive that time, they are less likely to have as firm a grasp of the concept, there are certain exceptions to every rule. Simply because a set amount of time is allocated to a particular subject, it does not mean that a student will need that amount of time in order to be able to grasp the concept. If a student cuts class, but continues to make straight As, then it is obvious that they have a good grasp of the concept and should not be penalized for using their time in a manner that they may believe to be more effective. If a student, however, is cutting class and their grades do not reflect that they have a good grasp of the material, they should be penalized, because they are showing that they do not know how to effectively manage their time in order to ensure that they have a good grasp of the concept at hand.
