Types of Firearms

310 words | 2 page(s)

This chapter begins by introducing the basics both of gun-smithing generally, and the specifics of this particular gun-smithing course. Particularly illuminating about the introductory remarks was the idea that while the majority of gun-smithing work is in general maintenance and repair, there is also a significant amount of work available in specialised fields. The chapter emphasises the importance of hands-on experience with the many techniques which will be covered in the course; I found the information on the different sources of practical information and practice particularly helpful, as I was unaware of the different publications and manuals available. I am also now much better aware of the need to integrate good business and communication skills with my understanding of the techniques and processes of gun-smithing; the chapter has introduced me to the idea that gun-smithing is as much about my character and business-sense as it is a highly-developed technical skill.

The second section of the chapter introduces the basic differences between shot-guns and rifles, explaining the differences in ammunition used, and the differences in the ways the two different types of gun fire the different types of ammunition. This section of the chapter makes it clear that correctly assessing and utilising the correct size and type of ammunition for a particular firearm is essential to both using and maintaining it correctly. This section also makes it clear how the differences in construction between the different types of gun contribute to differences in performance, making a shotgun more suitable for wild-bird game than a rifle, for example.

The final section of the chapter deals with applying for a federal firearms license. This section clarified the regulations pertaining to gun-smithing work, helping me to understand the necessity of fully understanding all laws and codes pertaining to gun-smithing work. This section is invaluable, as it has made this complex subject seem more manageable.
