Introduction
In some ways, the fight between the USSR and Germany was the most volatile of all of the battles. The reason for this is that the USSR was a Communist country, while Germany was a Fascist country. Ultimately, it became a battle between communism and fascism.

The war influenced the society of the USSR immensely during the war and after. For instance, during the war, as in many other countries, patriotic actions increased. This promoted a sense of unity. As such, some persecutions, such as those of the Orthodox Church, ceased.

Political Impacts
Stalin anticipated the alliance with Germany to continue. When it did not, the USSR found itself unprepared for the events that would follow. Although the USSR was able to fight back against Germany invasion, it did not come without a price. Many soldiers and civilians paid with their lives. After the war, the USSR took advantage of the instability of Europe to establish communist governments in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Romania and Bulgaria (Effect of World War II on Each Country). This push for communism would continue to grow until the 1950s and the Cold War.
Economical Impacts
World War II was devastating for most of Europe. The USSR was no exception. As the Red Army retreated into the USSR, buildings and food supplies were destroyed to prevent the German army from being able to utilize them. This had a two-fold effect. While it did serve a purpose in stopping the advance of the German army, the Red army was unable to utilize these supplies during and after the war.
Conclusion
The USSR may have had the most advantages in Europe after the war. Though the country was devastated along with the majority of other countries, its government was largely intact. In contrast, the government was in shambles for most of the other countries in Europe. These advantages allowed them to seize power in these devastated countries and utilize this power to expand their own borders.
