Love plays an important role in family relationships, not just for humans but for all mammals. Love seems to happen instantaneously when a child is born; the parents love the child, and all those who love the parents love the child by extension. Time together creates stronger and more personal bonds which strengthen and reinforce love.
Because of love we protect each other, not just from grave dangers but from small discomforts. When you love someone, you see the world through their eyes as well as your own which may be an advantage to both.

In a family the linkages of love form a protective device like a web of strength. This is where we find comfort in our family, a deep feeling of safety and of loving and being loved.
Families necessarily form group dynamics, and this are always evolving. As people learn and grow (and we are all always learning and growing) love can cause conflicts to develop. This could include jealousy when someone feels they are not getting the quality time with a family member they love. It can include being unable to express something to a family member, which can affect the connection and cause pain.
Love can be jealous, sweet, selfish or ever-sacrificing; in fact, scholarly articles show that love is typically chaotic (Beck 2014)- but even the negative that comes from a place of wanting the closeness, the time and love of our family members. We have a deep need for a sense of belonging. In seeking it out, within the family, we also give others that deep sense of belonging.
