Workplace Sexual Harassment

319 words | 2 page(s)

In the following essay, I would like to take a closer look at the article by Jane Anne Morrison called ‘Sexual Harassment Dominates News Cycles in 2017’. Here, the author expresses doubts in regard to the anti-sexual harassment movement and its long-term effects for American society. She talks about sexual harassment as ‘the top national story in the United States’ in 2017.

Morrison writes about the most recent tendencies for publicly revealing sexual harassment at work. The author looks at a series of cases: from Donald Trump to Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein. According to Morrison, the accusations usually lead to the harasser being fired (or resigning voluntarily). Furthermore, she emphasizes that there is little confidence that firing the accused person will actually solve the problem. She concludes that the movement may end up ‘in the ocean, losing steam,’ like volcano lava.

The author’s ideas are somewhat controversial; I both agree and disagree with her. In fact, I would not devalue the present-day movement, when both men and women talk openly about the sexual assaults. While it is true that this tendency may not be a ‘game changer’, I am confident that it is one of the key steps on the way to greater personal freedom. Moreover, I would not want to deem this process as unimportant. In the future, laws should be passed, as well as codes of conduct, to support these big changes.

In conclusion, there is no easy way. The abolition of slavery took a long time to achieve, and even after it took place, social changes came slowly. All big shifts need time and effort. In addition, I would not place all hope on the process of publicly disclosing sexual assault cases. Legal and organizational changes must follow to ensure long-term change.
