The skills that are developed early in life are the key to understanding and learning as a child continues to grow. The basic building blocks of early development determine the child”s ability to make connections between materials that are heard or read and subsequently comprehended that information in order to obtain new knowledge.

Researchers have studied the impact of early skills such as cognition and language and the “relationship between phonological awareness, overall language, vocabulary, and non linguistic cognitive skills to decoding and reading comprehension” (Skebo, Lewis, Freebairn, Tag, Ciesla, & Stein, 2013, pg. 360). Language skills and the cognitive ability to process the information play an important role in education and school work as a child enters the middle years of childhood.

These middle years, according to researchers Freebairn, Tag, Ciesla, and Stein (2013), occur during stage three of literacy development which is a time period when children move beyond learning to read and into a learning period where reading becomes a source of learning. During the previous stages, the child learned to decode symbols, understand spelling and grammar, and use context words to gain meaning from the passage. If these skills were hindered in the early stages of literacy development, then the results would be difficulty in reading and comprehension at this stage of development.

The necessity to transition from learning to read and using reading as a skill to learn to information becomes more apparent during the middle years of childhood. The lack of this transition would cause the child to have a difficult time completing school work and understanding the new information. The inability to process the readings would create a negative feeling about learning in the child and further diminish the child”s drive to learn(Skebo, Lewis, Freebairn, Tag, Ciesla, & Stein, 2013).
