My proposal will focus on the Chattahoochee River and the massive amounts of pollution that it is currently suffering from. The Chattahoochee River is one of Columbus, Georgia’s most recognized and important physical landmarks, and is responsible for providing drinking water not just to Columbus, but to numerous other communities along its length.
However, in recent years, the Chattahoochee River has become exceptionally polluted due to industrial runoff and sewage from the city of Atlanta and other communities further upstream. This has had a demonstrable effect on water quality and environmental cleanliness in Columbus and other downstream communities, with rising levels of bacteria and other health-threatening substances in the water. In particular, rising levels of E.coli present in the Chattahoochee’s waters present a clear danger to the health of Columbus residents and anyone else who is downstream from the river’s headwaters.

My case study will focus on studying the sources of pollution in the Chattahoochee River, both sources from Atlanta and other upstream communities to sources in and around Columbus. My goal is to present a detailed examination of where the pollution in the Chattahoochee is coming from and why it presents a threat to the health of the communities who rely on it for drinking water. I will then present possible solutions in regards to cleaning up the Chattahoochee and making it a cleaner and safer river.
Solutions will involve both those that can be implemented in Columbus as well as those that will require cooperation from the city of Atlanta and the Georgia state government. Finally, I will refute arguments against the pollution in the Chattahoochee River, showing that the pollutant level in its waters is at an unacceptable level and is a serious threat to the health of not only Columbus residents, but people throughout Georgia who use it as a source of drinking water.
