For a student, The Book of Proverbs provides useful sayings essential to success in school. In Proverbs 21:5 (New International Version) it is written, “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” Proverbs 16:16-16 states, “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver! The highway of the upright avoids evil; those who guard their ways preserve their lives.” I will discuss what these verses say to me regarding living a life of wisdom, diligence, and integrity. I will also discuss how these verses can be applied to my educational pursuits in relation to time management and academic integrity.
Regarding wisdom, Proverbs 21:5 reminds me that as I get older and gain life experience, I repeatedly learn that to do something excellent, I need to take my time and not rush things. Proverbs 16:16-17 tells me that by pursuing wisdom via my education, I will make my life better in the long run. My education provides me with the wisdom to explore career choices that will fulfill me rather than career choices that will simply make me money.

Regarding diligence, Proverbs 21:5 tells me that being thorough and persistent in my work will lead to a successful life. The successful people I know became that way because they spent their time working diligently at their craft or goal. My friend became a surgeon because she tirelessly studied, worked, and pushed herself above and beyond. Proverbs 16:16-17 tells me that all my hard work and diligence in college will help me realize the importance of wisdom and insight over material pursuits.
In regards to integrity, I believe Proverbs 21:5 tells me to be tireless in my pursuit to live morally and honestly. Sometimes the lure to gossip feels easy when in a social setting. To have integrity, however, I need to check myself when this happens and stop, even at the risk of being judged or missing out. Similarly, Proverbs 16:16-17 tells me the upright life, or a life of integrity, is gained by avoiding evil. In other words, the better path is the path of morality and honesty.
Applying Proverbs 21:5 to my educational pursuits in relation to time management reminds me to do things well rather than quickly. Instead of waiting until the last minute to complete assignment, I will get them done ahead of time in order to have time enough to edit and revise. Proverbs 16:16-17, when applied to time management, reminds me to give priority to my academic pursuits over others. Now is the time for wisdom and insight, and I schedule myself accordingly by having a daily “to do” list of academic goals and assignments.
Regarding academic integrity, Proverbs 21:5 is a warning against taking the easy way. For example, it would be very easy to use Google and find the answers to a research question or use Wikipedia instead of a peer-reviewed source. Proverbs 16:16-17 warns against evil, and in the case of academic integrity the evil can be interpreted as cheating on a test or assignment. By taking the easy path in my academic work, I would only be cheating myself of something I have worked hard for, my college education.
In sum, the Book of Proverbs offers words to live by for any student desiring academic success and fulfillment.
