1. Online learning is a relatively new but increasingly necessary component of education and training situations. Providing materials and assessments through the internet allows for a degree of flexibility that was previously unfathomable. However, the system also raises a number of new issues. Two of the challenges faced by those who wish to implement online learning strategies include the training involved with using webpage access points or other software, and facilitating one-on-one instruction when it is appropriate. The first concern presents a somewhat circular problem as training could be required in order to use the training materials. Fortunately software and web coding advancements have made systems relatively easy, but institutions should still be required to offer training for those instructors who will be using online learning tools for the first time. Access points should also be requested to make one-on-one encounters available via password-locked chat and/or e-mail if the options are not already present.
2. a) Security concerns are a complex issue in the delivery of online learning services. The internet is quite simply a vulnerable place where the potential for data to be intercepted at virtually any point in the process. However, security professionals have been working against, and sometimes with hackers to counteract the potential for damage in most sensitive data-transfer situations. The software and systems used in the delivery of online learning should be up-to-date with modern techniques and regularly updated to minimize the opportunity for security breaches. Best practices should also be taught to instructors as well as students/trainees, such as how to avoid phishing scams and how to properly select and save a password. In high-risk scenarios, such as when access issues have already been detected, professional monitoring of organizational networks may be necessary.
