The 21st century comes with many organizational challenges, especially to firms that operate on a multinational level. Management of organizations that operate on a global scale is faced with not only communication practices, but also by other factors such as emotional intelligence, and other cultural issues. According to Hackman and Johnson (2013), leadership is a compound term that encompasses many attributes; some of them are personal while others are social. For this reason, any factors that affect personal and social space have great impact on how managers and leaders perform their duties within an organization.

Culture and emotional intelligence have myriad impacts on leadership within an organization. Emotional intelligence is the ability to master one”s own emotions and the emotions of other people. When a leader is unable to achieve greater levels of emotional intelligence, it becomes difficult for them to control, direct, inspire, and motivate other juniors. Conversely, leaders or managers with greater levels of emotional intelligence can inspire, direct, motivate, and control the efforts of the junior workers towards the achievement of organizational goals.

Hackman and Johnson (2013) also puts forward that culture in modern societies could impact the performance of a leader. Leaders operating in a culture that they understand are more likely to excel than those who operate in a culture they are not familiar with because they know how to communicate with workers and approach to other things such negotiations. Denning (2007) argues that culture defines the rules of communication in an organizations. For this reason, a leader who does not understand the symbols or rules of communication used by the dominant culture is likely to be ineffective than that one who understands the rules of the symbolic and spoken communication. For this reason, it is always important for leaders and managers to have good understanding of the dominant culture, their rules of communication and approach to various aspects of life to improve their emotional intelligence, communication skills, and productivity.
