Gun Violence Around The World

343 words | 2 page(s)

Gun violence around the world has been a pressing issue for such a long time. The use of guns as weapons of mass destruction has been a norm for over a century, but rarely nothing has been done especially in America due to the gun lobby. Guns have a long history in the U.S. because they have been used to kill a massive amount of people. Other countries have put through rules such as gun buybacks and gun bans in order to limit the number of mass shootings. In Australia, they had a gun buyback that has greatly reduced the amount of gun violence in the country. In Britain, they also have put a firearm ban in place that allowed the community to become much more civil. In Japan, the Constitution and the rules say that one cannot own a gun unless given permission by the government. Moreover, people who want to own guns there must pass a rigorous background check that will ultimately screen the individual for any wrongdoing.

Moreover, in the U.S., gun laws are much more lax and citizens can easily acquire a gun through the gun show loophole. Background checks are also thwarted and people are able to get around this easily. The culture of the U.S. is that of freedom, but sometimes this freedom can be a double edged sword. Moreover, people in the U.S. need to believe in trying to get rid of guns for good. The U.S. has the number one gun violence rate in the country; in my opinion, this is unacceptable and something needs to be done.

I’d like the U.S. to adopt Japan’s policy of gun control that ultimately allows for the eradication of all gun violence and mass shootings. In the U.S., people are too concerned about the Second Amendment and not concerned enough about actual lives at stake.
