In my experience working with managers, I have seen them execute sound decisions, in legal, ethical and social terms. This paper will give an example of each.
I saw my manager make a legally-sound decision one night at work with a full-time employee who was nearing the end of his 40 hours a week shift. Legally, if my co-worker had stayed longer than 40 hours, he would had to be paid time-and-a half for the extra time according to state law. My co-worker offered to stay longer and work off the clock, but my manager said he wasn’t authorized by our owner to pay overtime to any employees unless it was an emergency. He couldn’t get ahold of the owner, and, even though we still had customers in the store, told my co-worker to go home at the end of his shift, and took over his responsibilities. My manager and I took care of the customers until closing, and didn’t break the law.

My manager also made an ethically-sound decision by providing customers with a new order of food or a free dessert free of charge when they complain if their meal is not up to par. We want our customers to always feel satisfied when they visit us so they’ll come back another time, so he has, on several occasions when customers have complained, given them free food. This is ethically-sound, because it is designed to make customers happy, and gives our business a good name in the community.
My manager also has demonstrated social responsibility by having our business help out in the community. We offer free gift certificates to charities, and sometimes provide food for free, or a reduced charge, for a charitable organization’s gathering. It not only helps out the charities, but also makes us feel good, and gets our business’ name out in the community. We sometimes hear from customers that they heard of us during a charity event, and decided to come into our business because they liked our food.
