Migrant Caravan

621 words | 3 page(s)

The phenomenon of migration has been on the rise throughout the world. In the majority of cases, people are forced to leave their homes in search of financial security. About 40 million of the US residents come from an immigrant origin which amounts to approximately 14% of the population in the country. The legal status of these migrants is not always clear, but of these people are ready to undertake the lowest-paid jobs to continue earning money in the US. The efforts of the US government to restrict migration from Mexico were largely politicized with little justification for such measures. The caravan of migrants should continue coming to the US. Otherwise, the country will bear significant economic losses.

There is one particular reason why the US remains prejudiced to migrants from Mexico. They constitute the largest number of unauthorized migrants to the United States. However, between 2007 and 2017, the presence of Mexican immigrants to the United States decreased by more than one million people. (Lopez et al., 2018). This data demonstrates how the US politicians abused the topic of immigration during the election period. If the US continues to keep the policy line against immigration, it will put the people who cross borders in tremendous danger. In that case, the United States will immediately violate the international human rights law.

The efforts to fortify the southern borders of the United States do not stop people in search for social security in the United States. Instead of using the legal ways of crossing the border, migrants risk their lives without any available options for reaching the United States. The issue continues to intensify as the time passes, too. There is a generation of Mexican immigrants who found their home in the US. However, their children reside in Mexico. Their illegal presence in the United States prevents them from any access to their relatives at home. Without the US government facilitating access to the country for migrants’ caravan, people will continue to be disconnected from their families.

The large caravan of migrant continues to head to the northern US borders for several reasons. Immigrants understand the competitiveness and prejudices towards Mexicans in the Southern states. They move further to find a comfortable place for their families to live. Quite often, these prejudices are unjustified. If the US government decides to strengthen the border control with the US military, it will require additional spendings from the US budget. American taxpayers will have to contribute other taxes for the national border protection. At the same time, the country has not designed a single policy to assimilate the migrants. The efforts to stop the ongoing migration will not entirely solve one of the most resonant issues in the US.

The migration from the Central American countries constitutes a considerable issue for the US, too. The US President Donald Trump once stated that the caravans of migrants are full of Hondurans and claimed to stop the influx of immigrants from that country. The destabilized situation in Honduras leads to the emigration from the country in search for economic stability to the United States. The United States does not have enough leverage to interfere in an internal policy of Honduras. Instead, the Administration of Donald Trump can ease the migration flow and offer viable solutions to immigrants from other countries.

The United States proved little efficiency in resolving the issue of migration. The closure of the US-Mexican border will be impossible. It will result in the larger-scale crisis between the two states. Thus, the US government should allow a secure pathway for migrants and create viable solutions to migration caravan.
