Nursing Conflict

674 words | 3 page(s)

Behaviors: In this example, the client faces an uphill battle in her efforts to recover from the surgical experience that she has encountered. After a radical mastectomy, the client expressed fear, frustration, and annoyance when she was approached regarding her own self-care. Performing self-care behaviors is very difficult for the client in her current state and leads to her obvious frustration and lack of understanding of why she is being asked to perform these duties to begin with. Her tone and lack of acceptance of what is being asked of her is clear and is highly relevant to the example.

Your impression of behaviors: Based upon the client’s response to the request made by the nurse and the doctor’s orders, it is important to recognize the client’s frustration, confusion, anger, and annoyance at the nurse in this situation. However, most importantly, the client appears to be exercising these emotions in response to the situation at hand rather than the nurse. The nurse happens to be involved in the client’s care; however, her participation is not necessarily the reason for which the client is lashing out. This anger and frustration is misdirected to some degree because it reflects the client’s attention onto the nurse, even though this is not the true source of her annoyance. The client is lashing out at those who will listen to her, even though her true frustration is with herself.

Underlying needs: The client is seeking comfort and reassurance because her circumstances are challenging and she has just experienced major surgery. She is clearly frustrated with her limitations at this stage and she is also experiencing great discomfort, both of which are frustrating to the client in her current state. As a result, it is necessary to consider the role of the client’s needs and to allow her a window of time where she is not required to perform physical activities such as self-care until she experiences greater comfort. In addition, by asking for assistance, the client is in need of help to manage her condition until her strength returns. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these issues and to address the importance of the client’s needs above all else. This must include a greater focus on the client, including greater comfort and support during this difficult period. These efforts are likely to generate positive outcomes and reduce the risks associated with poor health status for the patient during the recovery phase.

Suggested nursing action: In order to avoid any possible conflicts with the client, it is important for the nurse to demonstrate compassion and understanding for her needs in a manner that is consistent with the practical nature of the situation. There are considerable issues that must be addressed when working with clients who have just had surgery because they often face difficult challenges that they are unprepared to manage. This requires nurses to be compassionate and patient at all times in working with clients who might experience frustration as a result of their health status. This information is critical for nurses because it reflects the importance of addressing patient needs in a specific manner to provide support and encouragement. It is also necessary to prevent conflicts between nurses and clients as best as possible by utilizing proven strategies to overcome possible conflicts or differences of opinion regarding care plans. Although clients might not be prepared to begin therapeutic measures to assist in recovery efforts, these measures must be addressed by maintaining open lines of communication between nurses and clients to address matters as needs change.

In addition, nurses must reflect upon the challenges that their clients experience during the recovery process and why client emotions may be difficult to manage during this period. It is important to address these concerns and to take the steps that are necessary to improve a client’s health status and his or her potential to fully recover from surgery in a manner that is consistent with a gradual improvement in health, wellbeing, and emotional state.
