Nursing Personal Statement

692 words | 3 page(s)

When writing a personal statement about why I want to be a nurse, it would seem a cliché to write that I want to help people and care for them. This is most likely the reason that anyone would want to be a nurse. However, clichés develop for a reason: there is a distinct aspect of them that is true. I do not believe that anyone would desire to enter the challenging field of nursing if he or she did not have a heartfelt desire to serve others.

However, it is more than my desire to help others and to serve humanity that makes me want to be a nurse. For me, it is the natural progression of a care in psychiatric services. I have worked in this field for over seven years. During that time, I have had the privilege to help clients and their families at some of the darkest moments of life. During this time, I have also worked side by side with some wonderful psychiatric nurses. I recognize that there are aspects of care that they can provide that I cannot. I also recognize that they have an advanced level of knowledge that I lack. I hope to change this. I want to serve my clients in this manner. I desire the knowledge that nurses have in an attempt to help people during moments of crisis.

For the past seven years, I have worked as an intensive case manager for psychiatric clients. I work to provide individuals with comprehensive psychiatric care. Many of these individuals have severe, chronic and persistent psychiatric issues. Of course it is challenging. At times it is daunting. However, I recognize that my challenges on a daily basis cannot compare with the challenges that my clients face. I want to bring an increased level of knowledge and understanding to this field. I have realized that I can do this through nursing.

This has been my chosen field for most of my adult life. Prior to my current position, I spent a year as a counselor in a group home. I worked with children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. This was also an important part of my career and personal development. These individuals often struggle to do tasks that many of us take for granted. I believe this was the first time that I truly recognized the power of empathy and understanding. Since this position, I believed that I needed to spend my life in a field where I could assist others in need.

I have expanded my experience with volunteer work as well. During my career, I have volunteered at Kessler Rehabilitation Center. I have also worked on research in brain cancer and developmental disabilities. I plan to continue working in the volunteer arena in these areas. I believe that volunteer time is a gift that one gives himself or herself. Through the experience the volunteer always receives more than he or she gives.

As I already wrote, this journey has taken me to the recognition that I could offer more if I attended nursing school. I truly desire working as a psychiatric nurse. However, I have recognized that this will not likely be the last part of my educational and personal journey. After I complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I plan to attend graduate school in the area of nursing. Specifically, I plan on earning my master’s degree in nursing. My eventual goal is to be a Nurse Practitioner who works in the area of psychiatric nursing. In this way, I could make an even greater difference in the life of psychiatric clients.

It is hard to imagine how my life would have turned out if I had not discovered this need to help others. I recognize that I may not be able to help everyone who crosses my path in life. However, I hope to be given this opportunity to try. In my current position, there are limits to what I can do for my clients. I hope to expand these limits. I have learned that the clients deserve everything we can possibly offer them during their treatments.
