There are four styles of parenting. These styles are authoritarian parenting, authoritative parenting, neglectful parenting and indulgent parenting. (Santrock, 2010) At one time the last style mentioned was called permissive parenting. Here are some brief definitions of these parenting styles.
Authoritarian parents are the parents that are in strict control of their children and they must follow the rules set by them. The authoritative parents are the ones that have strict rules, but they are able to adjust their rules to fit the situations that happen. Neglectful parents are the parents that believe that the parents career s are more important than the children. Finally, the indulgent parent who are the ones who are highly involved in their children’s lives and place few demands on the children. (Santrock, 2010)

Effect on the Children
In working with children with all these types of parenting styles and the lifestyles of the families, for example working with Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans and other cultures these parenting styles are affected in this way. “ There are exceptions that have been found that authoritative parenting with competence on the part of the child in dealing with social areas, cultures and the family. In other cultures deal better with authoritarian cultures where they believe in having children meet high achievements or to have children respect the parents and be obedient.” (Santrock, 2010) The indulgent parent and the neglectful parent as mentioned before either do not care or over-protective. Questions always arises on which parenting style is the best and research has shown which is better to show how parents can show how their children are loved and still do well in the community or are they just wanting their children to be the best at all costs to whomever they happen to be around in the community.
