Philippe displays high degree of self-confidence, respect for rules, social skills, and cooperative stance whether in home or school setting. Once he commits to an objective or a goal, he gives his all. He always strives for the highest performance standards as is evident by his scoring top grades in all of the subjects at school. Since entering British International School, Jakarta about two years ago, he has already won Gold and Bronze Awards at the annual UK Math Challenge.

Philippe doesn’t only strive for excellence in academics but displays the same dedication and strong work ethics in other aspects of school life as well. Philippe serves in the Student Council and is a coordinator of the recycling project. His love for knowledge continuously motivates him to seek new avenues of learning and this is how he taught himself coding outside school hours. Using his advanced Math skills and knowledge of JavaScript, he is currently developing a computer game. Excelling in academics and extracurricular activities has not made Philippe relaxed in any manner because he is continuously pushing himself which explains his involvement in sports. He currently represents his school in swimming and soccer and has participated in FOBISIA and SEASAC, two international competitions among British international schools in the Southeast Asian region. Competing at both local and international levels has helped Philippe expand his worldview and given him a global perspective on issues.
Philippe’s love for learning is not limited to school setting only but even over family dinners, he often challenges us (his parents) to participate in solving Math puzzles and encourages everyone on the table to make contributions. He enjoys the actual problem-solving process as much as arriving at the answer and doesn’t care how much time and efforts the answer may require. Sometimes, it takes him as long as 2-3 days to arrive at the answer, either through his own efforts or through discussions with teachers and/or friends who share his passion for Math. While I admire his quest for knowledge and his passion, I sometimes worry he may alienate one of his teachers sooner or later due to his constant badgering.
Philippe is also a capable linguist as demonstrated by his proficiency in three languages, i.e. English, Bahasa Indonesian, and Mandarin Chinese. I have no doubt his language skills will be an asset in this valuable Math Program because they will enable him to interact and share ideas with students from all over the world. I would like to emphasize the fact that Philippe has already successfully completed two overseas summer programs and each time his actually learning experiences exceeded his and our expectations. Thus, he could not have been more excited at the opportunity to participate in your distinguished program. He is also looking forward because despite being third overseas learning experience, this will be the first program focused on Math which is one of his life’s greatest loves. I am confident this program will further expand his Math capabilities as well as thinking horizon and also enhance his creative potential and problem-solving skills. This program will also teach Philippe how to analyze problems from different angles to solve puzzles more efficiently.
