Community service is one of the most important things that a person can do in today’s society. In the United States, society has become very stratified. People who are born into poverty and difficulty often have very little chance to pull themselves out of that situation. Whether a person is disabled or just afflicted with life-altering poverty from an early age, they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Community service, then, is an opportunity for people who have been blessed with talent and time and invest in those people who have not been born into such a positive situation.
To those who much is given, much is expected. It is not enough to simply say that a person should “give back.” Rather, community service should be a commitment to re-investment. Not only does completing community service provide benefits for those who are less fortunate, but it also provides immeasurable benefits for the person doing the service. It provides the community servant with tremendous perspective on life, offering her a portrait of what it is like to live in someone else’s situation.

Our society, too, is trending away from the provision of social services. As government help for the less fortunate is cut, it becomes much more important for people to pick up the slack. This means doing more than just giving money to people who do not have any. It also means giving time and energy to those individuals and causes that are important to you. Every person has a passion inside, whether it is for underprivileged children to early education to prisoner re-entry. Each person can make a huge impact when that person learns to follow his or her passion. This is where community service truly comes alive.
