The Influence of Australian Democracy on International Business

334 words | 2 page(s)

Australia has a proud history. In fact, “Australian society is defined, among other aspects, by a belief in elected Government; by a commitment to the rule of law, to equal rights for all before the law; and by a belief in freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of association. Our society is also tolerant of a range of religious, political, social and cultural beliefs and values in the context of the fundamental principle of our democracy” (Kangan Institute, 2014). Therefore, Australian democracy has a tremendous influence on international business.

However, it is important to realize that “there is no such thing as a perfect democracy. Democracy is not an all-or-nothing affair, but rather a shifting continuum … The key democratic principles are those of popular control and political equality. These principles define what democrats at all times and in all places have struggled for – to make popular control over public decision making both more effective and more inclusive; to remove an elite monopoly over decision making and its benefits; and to overcome obstacles such as those of gender, ethnicity, religion, language, class, wealth and so on to the equal exercise of citizenship rights” (Assessing the Quality of Democracy: A Practical Guide, p. 18; 20). Therefore, it is unsurprising that international business changes with democracy changes.

The franchise sector within Australia is particularly important to the economy. Therefore, the Wein Review was conducted by the small businesses within this sector. Within the Wein Review, it was suggested that the government make changes to reflect changes in the economy due to online shopping; clarify the expectation of good faith between franchisees, franchisors, and the government; and encourage adherence to the Code (Report No. 6, 2014). IN this way, the Australian democracy influenced international business by expecting it to adhere to a specific code that encourages fair business dealings between all involved.
