The smartphone market has experienced great transformation over the recent years as firms compete to attain a large share in the global market. New and more powerful smartphone are released to the market for consumers to enjoy. The leading smartphone firms are involved in strong competitions to ensure a leading position in terms of better quality smartphone. Currently iPhone and galaxy products dominate the market and each strives to lead the other. This has led to series of newer generation smartphones by both firms. The most powerful smartphones namely IPhone 6 and galaxy 6 are now available in the market. The have improved features such as camera definition, screen size, weight, appearance, and faster operating systems among others. Different groups have developed comparisons between the two brands to show the better smartphone and hence help customers in making purchase decisions. This paper aims to compare the iPhone and galaxy products in effort to determine the better brand.
The market performances for both brands would reveal the better brand based on customer preferences. The performance of the two brands is obtained from the sales statistics that could show the firm with larger market share. Over the year, iPhone has led in the phone sales in the market as compared to galaxy brand. However, galaxy has been doing well since 2010 and has maintained a positive growth in number of unit sales. According to Triggs (1), the sales for galaxy products increased from 3 milion in September 2010 to 38 million units in December 2012. Significant growth was experienced in 2012 with a growth from 9 million unit sales in March upto 38 million units in December. During the same time duration the iPhone sales increased from 14 t0 48 million units between 2010 and 2012. Nevertheless, the iPhone sales have not consistent increased and fell in September 2011 and in June 2012. This trend shows an increasing competition by Samsung on the iPhone sales.

A deeper analysis of the two brands focuses on the brands and their range of features especially due to new versions released by both firms into the market since 2012. The firms have launched new versions at different periods and this would have impact on sales volume. Moreover comparison of phones in different versions would reveal misleading information is assessing the better brand. For instance, comparing the iPhone 6 with galaxy s5 may give unfair comparisons. In this paper, phones in same generation are compared to determine the better performing product. In particular, iPhone 6 is compared against Samsung galaxy 6 on the range of feature and design since are available in the market. On the issue of price, both brands were launched at with same price of 199 and 299 US dollars for the two type of each brand (O’Donnell 10). Galaxy has galaxy S6 and galaxy S6 Edge each with 32 GB storage and cost 199 and 299 dollars respectively. On the other hand, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are versions iPhone costing 199 and 299 dollars respectively.
The battery life for both brands show difference with Samsung galaxy lasting for over a day while the iPhone 6 could last for up to 14 hours (10). Bothe phones have non-removable battery with power usage rating of 2550mAh for galaxy and 18mAh for the iPhone. For both phones, customers cannot trade out the phone battery for extra power. Another distinguishing feature for both phones is the operating system which determines the speed of phones performance and consumer experience. Samsung galaxy s6 uses the Lollipop OS 5.0.2 android version which is the latest development of the firm (8). IPhone 6 is powered by iOS 8 that could be upgraded to 8.3 versions. The iOS has features including AirDrop as well as Handoff that enable consumers to easily share information with other devices and iPhone apple product such as iPad.
The brands are also distinguished from their sizes of their screen. Customers are showing preference for smartphones with large screen that give a wide view. The firms are moving towards developing phone with large screens as observed in the brands iPhone 6 and galaxy S6. Galaxy s6 has a screen measuring 5.1 inches compared to that of iPhone measuring 4.7 inch tall (3). Nevertheless, the iPhone 6 plus has a phablet of 5.5 inch and hence larger compared to all others. Another important feature is the storage and both brands have storage of as high as 128 GB. Despite this, the brands do not provide for external storage of using micro SD cards. According to Mills (1), there are great difference between the galaxy S5 and iPhone 5 and therefore similar generation of the two brands may not vary significantly in features and performance.
The above features for both the iPhone and galaxy brands, present the two brands almost to same levels of performance. It can be seen that there are no differences in the prices and storage capacities for both brands. Moreover, the differences in the size of screen, battery life and operating system are not very large. Nevertheless, galaxy has longer battery life and screen size while iPhone has more features for the operating system. Based on these features, the galaxy is seen as better brand by a small degree despite lagging behind the iPhone in global sales.
