Approach for the Study
The perceptions of African American students are altered based on shared community beliefs and ideas (Crisp, 2009). Looking specifically at individuals attending a historically black college or university, Recent evidence demonstrate the complex nature of perceptions this career that many African Americans have including psychosocial factors like interest, gender and perception (Olichwier, 2014). Therefore, it will be useful for this investigation to apply how specific factors in a HBCU setting influence the image and decision making around nursing career choices.

The approach for this study will initially comprise of a literature review regarding the nursing profession perceptions that African Americans have at HBCUs. Implications from a variety of sources within a student’s life will be assessed, including the influence of HBCU curriculum (Perna,2009). This information will be assimilated into a thorough questionnaire regarding the perceptions of nursing as a career. Such a tool will be administered at multiple HBCUs in order to gather enough evidence of the impact of related elements in the perception and decision of nursing as a profession. Amongst those who are evaluated, a number of students considering nursing, those who have already chosen a nursing tract, and some students from other departments will be selected in order to identify trends in perception across all disciplines.
