I believe that most people, either as customers or as providers of goods and services, tend to think of business only as a practical function supplying practical needs. Customers buy to gain what they want and business managers, and owners, are enabled to live through attending to those needs and wants. There is nothing at all wrong or misguided in this perspective. At the same time, I have always taken a different view of how virtually any type of business exists. In plain terms, business equates to human interactions apart from any other considerations.
It is a mutual process of exchange and, like so many other reciprocal relationships in life, it has dimensions often missed. This is how I perceive business, in that I believe it has a meaning beyond the strictly transactional, and if only because people usually invest even the most pragmatic concerns with personal thinking and feeling. Business, essentially, is only as matter-of-fact an activity as the people involved make it, and I feel that basic, human factors greatly expand what transactions may mean to those engaging in them.

To say that I “love business” may seem extreme. Any such claim also typically suggests that the person is dedicated to success and profit. I do not by any means minimize the importance of success. At the same time, what I would call my deep liking for business relates to an appreciation of what it can be. I have been fortunate enough to have witnessed, and participated in, business conducted at its best. My mother owns and operates both a cleaning service and an online retail presence, and, even when very young, I was aware that her work had meaning for her beyond earning what we needed to survive.
She was and is an excellent businesswoman, but a great deal of that quality derives from how she approaches all customer relations. She understands that she is not interacting with goods and money; she is allowing people to acquire what they need, and her professionalism has always generated a commitment in her to completely satisfy the customer. As this occurs, something very human happens as well. The dual satisfactions of my mother and those whom she serves complement one another, and all enjoy the gratification of credible, agreeable, personal exchange. I have literally seen this on the faces of my mother’s customers and, in helping her, I have worked to achieve the same goal of seeing real pleasure on customer faces when everything is exactly what they wanted.
This, then, is my core motivation for studying business. I certainly realize how, and especially today, education and training are essential. Online retail alone, as I have experienced in assisting my mother, adds a wide range of elements into the processes of transaction. Supply chains, record-keeping, marketing strategy, identifying demographics, potential expansions, using social media effectively, and other factors must be learned as critical, practical considerations. Even the most intense ambition to serve others through business is meaningless if there is no foundation of business knowledge, as well as the awareness of how changes in it constantly occur.
At the same time, however, I hold to my initial belief in business as much more than mere business. For me, it is an ongoing opportunity to be of service to others, while maintaining my own life. I have no illusions; I know business is hardly caring for the sick or feeding starved populations. Nonetheless, my determination to devote myself to business study remains strong because there is real integrity, and humanity, in performing a role that is necessary for the society, and for performing it with a sense of responsibility as to what it means to those turning to the business.
