It is never easy to determine where natural ability begins and early influences end. This is particularly true for me as I seek to identify just why I am so drawn to finance and business. On one level, I have been born into these fields, and in a very real sense; my grandfather and my father have always run their own businesses, and I grew up in an environment wherein a focus on everything related to business was a part of daily life. It was, and remains, “natural” to me, very likely because it was the chief concern of my family. On another level, it seems I have always had an aptitude fur numbers. Even as a child, I was intrigued by finance, seeing it almost as organic forces in play. Fascination generates more fascination, and I early on applied myself to more thoroughly understand these worlds of numbers and figures. If business is dry to some people, it is inherently exciting to me, and I must assume that a combination of environment and personal character have set me on this path. I am, moreover, thankful to all the factors, because I cannot imagine another path I would more wish to take.
I would as well say that I myself am an influence on my desire to study business. More exactly, and from my youngest efforts to comprehend finance, I have found that each acquisition of understanding triggers a resolve to go further and deepen my knowledge. When I was in high school, for example, I took second place in an “investment tournament.” It is often said that coming near to winning increases the desire to win the next time, and this may have been the case with me then. I think, however, that I was motivated more than enough by the actual event and the success I did achieve. It was not about taking first prize; it was about exploring my passion and expanding my abilities. As I worked harder, I felt myself more becoming myself, and I had the sense that I was committing my energies in a way that was truly right for me. Further study in business and finance has only made this feeling stronger, and I look forward to going on in this exciting process of developing my abilities to match my interests in the fields.
