Leadership Style Paper

698 words | 3 page(s)

Mark Cuban is one of the best and most accomplished leaders in the business or sports world. The owner of the Dallas Mavericks, the star of “Shark Tank,” and a noted leader in the tech world, Cuban has been immensely successful from a financial perspective. This success should not be surprising for any person has followed his work and his career, of course. He has used a leadership style that is very inspirational, and he is known for being extremely hands-off with his employees. These things have allowed him to attract and retain some of the best employees in the world, and in turn, he has contributed positively to his businesses’ successes, which have been many.

One of the most important events in Mark Cuban’s career came when he was fired for trying to grow the business of his boss. Rather than completing some rudimentary task, he was having a meeting and trying to attract a new account for the business. He was eventually fired for this, which was a major negative for his life. However, he learned some valuable lessons from this. For one, he learned that it is always good to give employees some freedom, as long as the owner has hired the right people.

With this in mind, his leadership style has been very hands-off. Rather than constantly micro-managing the daily tasks of the people under his charge, Cuban has focused much more on attracting and hiring candidates who are qualified and skilled. He has operated with a belief that if he hires the right kinds of people, then he will find long-term success as a business person. More than that, though, he has given his employees the freedom to make their own choices. He gives creative freedom to people in a similar style that one might expect while working for a place like Google. This, in turn, has given the company the creative and strategic direction that it has so desperately needed in order to have long-term success. The Dallas Mavericks are understood as a franchise that invests in everything that players could ever need, and while Cuban cares significantly about the success of the team, he understands how to delegate power. He allows his basketball experts to handle basketball decisions, and he tries to stick only to those things that he is very good at.

One of the marks of good leadership is the ability to keep passion while not allowing that passion to cause one to dive too closely into a business or its operations. For instance, one of Cuban’s contemporaries is a man named Jerry Jones, who owns the Dallas Cowboys. Jones has similar passion, but he cannot give up control of any aspect of the organization. This holds the Cowboys back. Cuban, on the other hand, is able to somehow retain his passion for the game and for his team, while also keeping a far enough distance away from the team’s day to day decisions. This has made him distinctive in a sense, and it has led to his success.

When looking at my own assessments, it is clear that there are some things I could learn from Cuban. For one, I could learn to trust my decision-making skills a little bit more. Cuban hires the right people and lets them go to work. Sometimes it can be difficult to do this if one does not yet have the confidence that comes with a long run of success with a given organization. It is very presumptuous to suggest that Mark Cuban might be able to learn things from me. However, Cuban might be able to take some humility from me. Cuban has a tendency to be very sure and very cocky. While this has always been a strength and an asset, it can also be a problem for him at times, especially when dealing with some of the politics involved in sports ownership. He was kept out of owning a baseball franchise, for instance, because some people just did not like his cocky demeanor. Cuban would be wise to learn some humility if he wants to continue to have doors opened in the sports world moving forward.
